A blog about the restoration, remodel and renovation of a 1929 Chicago-style brick bungalow

Drink, Anyone?

I finally tackled the bar area in the basement, which had been piled with crap. Everything is put away, the bar is stocked, and the record albums are hung on the wall around the pool table.

Just a few things left to do down there. We’ll probably have to patch the former cat pee areas with solid drywall. We’ve tried Home Depot, Menards and Crafty Beaver, and of course none has the wainscot panels to match the existing. I don’t think it will look odd; one area is the stairway wall, so it isn’t continuous with the rest of the wainscoting, and the other area is at the bottom of the stairs before you enter the room. In any case, I’ll try Lowe’s, but I doubt they’ll have it either.

We’re also starting to think about putting the bathroom back together down there, but we decided to eliminate the shower and just make it a powder room. We really don’t think that anyone would be taking a shower in the basement, and we’d have the expense of properly venting it outside the house instead of into the rafters like the PO did. The space where the shower was can be turned into a storage closet instead, which we will definitely use.

Denise, can I ask a favor? I’m remodeling my basement family room and plan to build a bar…I’ve seen your before/after pics, and I think what you’ve done is really sharp. I’ve got my brilliant ideas for everything (more or less), but I was hoping to get some ideas for the bar…would you be able to, when you get a chance (no rush) take more detailed pics of the bar itself (behind the bar, of the bar’s construction, etc.–whatever you feel like, doesn’t have to be big pics) and email them to me? I just need some “inspiration”…I have an idea, but I’m not 100 percent on execution yet. If not, no worries, I’ll understand. email is southsideandy (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Hi Denise – I like the bar, too – and will be most intersted to see how you convert that old shower into a storage closet. I’ve got one of those scary old showers in my basement, as well … next to a scary old stove that fortunately doesn’t spontaneously turn on …

Hi Denise, The basement looks great! Nothing like having a wet bar and a pool table. The look out windows look awesome, love the arch! Very cozy!
