Yard Crashers

Yesterday, Pete and I went to the local Menards to purchase supplies for our raised garden bed. After two years we were finally going to remove the blue tarp that covered the dirt near the compost (which hopefully killed off all the weeds). More on that later.

While we were in the garden section, we noticed the guy from DIY Network’s Yard Crashers, Ahmed Hassan, talking to someone along with a small camera crew. We watch the show fairly regularly and I knew they have been doing some yards in the Chicago area.

Pete kind of wanted to lurk and see if he talked to us, but I for one did not really want to be on camera, let alone a TV show, and I also wasn’t sure I could just give free reign to someone to makeover our yard. However the thought of possibly getting our yard finished was kind of appealing.

In the end though, we left without seeing him again.

We worked on our little project that afternoon, and Pete had to run back to the store for a couple more things.

As Pete pondered drill bits, Ahmed and his camera crew came out of nowhere to talk to him. I get a phone call from Pete and it’s Ahmed on the line! He said that Pete told him I was a little bit of a control freak (true) and I told him, well yes, I couldn’t just give someone carte blanche with my yard.

Maybe I was a fool for not getting our yard crashed, because if I could have gotten a pergola out of the deal, that would have been sweet! It seems they prefer a blank slate though, so I really don’t know if they would have worked around the stuff we’ve already done in the yard.

In any case, they may include Pete’s little encounter with Ahmed on the show, and we’ll just have to go back to working on the yard bit by bit.

    Oh. My. God. That’s awesome!

    They could totally crash my yard. Especially if there was a gazebo and/or a garage left behind …

    I’d LOVE for them (or anyone!) to crash my yard. Here it was a few months ago, and now it’s pretty much the same except that the dirt pile has started growing weeds: http://casabijansky.blogspot.com/2010/01/view-from-master-bedroom.html. (That’s the backyard; the front yard is even more of a wasteland.) I’ve been looking for a landscaping show to come to Austin, but so far no luck.

    Were they at the Menards on Oakton?
    I stopped there on SATURDAY evening…but I’m always there…MAN! Would have been sweet…

    So cool! 🙂

    Yeah, I kind of regret my camera-shyness, but I really doubt they would have chosen our yard since we have a fair amount of landscaping already done (even though we need tons more!).

    @southsideandy: yes, that’s the one!

    I look for this cute guy every time I visit Lowes, but I know he doesn’t venture this far east. What a nice approach – I wonder why so many shy away from his question about “crashing” their yard. I think it would be great.

    Yard crashers was at the Hobo in Villa park this past weekend March 4-5th. The first day they did a taping like suprising people, but the second day there was actually a casting.

    Hi Juan–there was a small notice in the Tribune last week announcing Yard Crashers at the Villa Park Hobo which we thought was odd. Maybe they waste too much time/money surprising people and scouting out suitable yards to crash? Interesting. In any case, we haven’t noticed if Pete was ever included in the intro to an episode.
