Guess what? My last post got me going and I made some phone calls: first to the village for general information about building codes and then to an architect. Woo hoo!

The village said that staircases should be three feet wide, but it sounded like they’d be somewhat lenient if it were a little smaller in an existing stairway space. 20080108011.jpgAs you can see, our current stair treads would definitely have to be increased, although the current rise could be a little taller as well, so that will help with the overall run of the stairs. (I should have included this photo in the previous post but forgot I had it.)

Then the architect came over yesterday. He has experience with bungalows and working within the existing configuration of the house. And he would accommodate how we want to work (i.e. doing as much of the work as possible ourselves). When we lived in our previous house and this house was not yet on my radar, we talked to several other architects about adding on and remodeling that house. They would also be the same architects that we would have called upon for this project.

One of those architects also had a lot of bungalow experience, however he would be waaaaay more expensive. We want a good plan, but we also don’t want anything extravagant, so I don’t think I’d go for him. And I just didn’t get a warm fuzzy feeling from the other two we talked to. One of our other bungalow neighbors knows someone, so perhaps we’ll call them too. In any case, this guy is supposed to send us a proposal for the project, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed and hope things start moving along.

Oh, and how do you like my fashion statement? What, didn’t you know that Birkenstock garden clogs and fluffy socks scrunched at the ankle are the “in” thing? Crocs are sooo 2007!
